چکیده

A wh-phrase positioned in an embedded clause can be interpreted as having a matrix scope if the sentence is produced with proper prosodic structures such wh-intonation. In previous experiment, was given to 40 speakers of Gyeongsang Korean. script containing provided induce interpretation for wh-phrase. These utterances were prepared stimuli perception test verify whether wh-phrases perceived scopes. Each utterance played thrice 24 subjects. The results showed that more than half 72 responses indicated preference rather 20 utterances. multiple linear regression analysis best predicted by magnitude pitch prominence word consisting verb and complementizer. calculated subtracting fundamental frequency (F0) at right edge from peak F0 same word. smaller magnitude, there were. suggest categorical wh-scopes based on prominence.

Phonological Suppression of Anaphoric Wh-expressions in English and Korean

This paper follows the lead of Chung (2013), examining the phonological suppression of the wh-expression in English and Korean. We argue that the wh-expression itself cannot undergo ellipsis/deletion/dropping, as it carries information focus. However, it can do so, when in anaphoricity with the preceding token of wh-expression, it changes into an E-type or sloppy-identity pronoun. This vehicle ...

Perceptual Discrimination of Prosodic Types

A perceptual discrimination test was conducted to investigate whether humans can discriminate prosodic types solely based on suprasegmental acoustic cues. Excerpts from Chinese, English, Spanish, and Japanese, differing in lexical accent types and rhythm types, were used. From these excerpts, “source” signals of the source-filter model, differing in F0, intensity, and HNR, were created and used...

Bilingual Infants Demonstrate Perceptual Flexibility in Phoneme Discrimination but Perceptual Constraint in Face Discrimination

Perceptual narrowing is a highly significant development associated with the first year of life. It conventionally refers to an orientation toward nativeness whereby infant's perceptual sensitivities begin to align with the phonetic properties of their native environment. Nativeness effects, such as perceptual narrowing, have been observed in several domains, most notably, in face discriminatio...

Coding perceptual discrimination in the somatosensory thalamus.

The sensory thalamus is classically viewed as a relay station of sensory information to cortex, but recent studies suggest that it is sensitive to cognitive demands. There are, however, few experiments designed to test whether this is so. We addressed this problem by analyzing the responses of single neurons recorded in the somatosensory thalamus while trained monkeys reported a decision based ...

Posttraining sleep enhances automaticity in perceptual discrimination.

Perceptual learning can develop over extended periods, with slow, at times sleep-dependent, improvement seen several days after training. As a result, performance can become more automatic, that is, less dependent on voluntary attention. This study investigates whether the brain correlates of this enhancement of automaticity are sleep-dependent. Event-related potentials produced in response to ...
